Quantum computing continues to evolve from a theoretically sound but practically challenged computational field to one whose extraordinary progress is attracting attention from researchers, engineers, end users and developers, not to mention investors and start-up entrepreneurs who sense its potential to revolutionize certain computational paradigms.  As a physicist and high-performance computing professional who has been fortunate to join the quantum computing movement during this exciting time, I am fully aware of the incredible number of paths to explore in quantum computing; including hardware, software and hybrid quantum/classical environments.  I believe that all of us interested in the field of quantum computing can greatly enhance the overall ecosystem by communicating with each other, listening to novel thoughts ideas, critiquing and elaborating, exploring paths that branch from the original kernel.  As a long-time member of the HPC and physics communities, with a current emphasis on quantum computing, I am eager to work with those who might be newer to this emerging technology than I, and to likewise benefit from others' perspectives.  In a mentor-mentee relationship, I envision a regular cadence of meetings for discussion, both in a general sense and also with a goal toward mutual advancement of professional involvement and development.  Affinity group development will be a long-term focus.

Introductory Level Goal 1:
Familiarization with Quantum Computing Concepts: Proposed and achieved over four months (complete):
Gained foundational knowledge in quantum computing principles, including qubits, superposition, and entanglement.

Introductory Level Goal 2:
Exploration of QC Hardware: Proposed and achieved over four months (complete):
Developed an understanding of different quantum hardware platforms, including superconducting qubits and trapped ions, along with their respective advantages and limitations.

Goal 2

Introductory Level Goal 3: Proposed and achieved over four months (complete):
Quantum Programming with Qiskit: Acquired introductory experience with the Qiskit framework, including constructing basic quantum circuits and learning foundational coding practices.

Introductory Level Goal 4: Proposed and achieved over four months (complete):
Job Submission on Quantum Systems: Learned how to submit quantum computing jobs to available quantum systems through the Qiskit framework, including understanding the basic workflow from circuit construction to job execution on IBM's quantum backend.

Goal 3

Intermediate Level: Gain access to ASU's HPC, Sol, in order to become familiar with the various quantum simulation packages available on Sol. Access has been provided; need to schedule and complete Sol's Beginner Training and take quantum simulation workshop. All are available during month of October; may replace attendance with recordings and/or personal 1:1 instruction.

Goal 4

Intermediate Level:
Project goals must be determined; specific application of use of simulation tool, estimated time frame (anticipating Feb 28, 2025) and relevance of computational experiment to quantum computing community will be delineated. Once results are obtained, analyzed, written up to the satisfaction of project lead, status of project can be characterized as complete.

Intermediate Level: Choose project(s) from four offered:
1- Quantum Rings
2- NVIDIA cudaQ
3- Quantinuum Nexus
4- Knowledge Base contributions

Torey (mentor) will describe to Soham (mentee) the different simulation projects outlined above. Soham can choose one. Goal will be completed once mentee is familiar with chosen project and ready to begin actual computational experiments.
