Project Description | The University of New Hampshire has standardized on the use of Aruba Networks Wireless Access Points (WAP) to offer network connectivity to UNH users. A feature included in the WAPs is the use of Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) beaconing to track assets in a particular location. Using software and asset tags, the location of objects in real time can occur, leading to a number of potential uses of this technology once installed and working in a base fashion. This project will establish a tracking application to find portable whiteboards in the UNH Dimond Library as a starting goal, with the potential for other expansions once accomplished. Since other institutions in New England may have also standardized WAPs with Aruba Networks, there is an opportunity to extend this project beyond UNH to learn from each other and build a regional team of developers who can bring new services to light. |

What will the student learn? | Good coding practices associated with mobile application development; implementation of hardware/software services; deployment and management of sensor technology; data analytics associated with Internet of Things (IoT) devices |
What will the mentee learn? | |
What will the Cyberteam program learn from this project? | How to involve more than one institution in the development of a commonly-defined service |
HPC resources needed to complete this project? | common storage, code repository, data analytics |
Notes | |
What is the impact on the development of the principal discipline(s) of the project? | This project will give students some experience in integrating the use of Internet of Things (IoT) to impact the campus community. |
What is the impact on other disciplines? | Any discipline that has a need to mark locations in space and discover locations in space could benefit from this technology deployment. |
Is there an impact physical resources that form infrastructure? | For locations that already have Aruba Networks wireless access points (WAP), those locations likely have beaconing services within the devices, but not engaged. This project utilizes BlueTooth Low-Energy (BTLE) beaconing, which if made available for researchers requiring some location-based research activity, will have a new venue for access to IoT research data. |
Is there an impact on the development of human resources for research computing? | The learning that will come from this project on how to code the BTLE services in the Aruba Networks environment to meet an particular outcome has an impact on what research computing might be able to offer as programming services. |
Is there an impact on institutional resources that form infrastructure? | Need to increase available access points to "see" IoT devices is required within buildings and in outdoor areas if this technology is to be used outside. |
Is there an impact on information resources that form infrastructure? | N/A |
Is there an impact on technology transfer? | N/A |
Is there an impact on society beyond science and technology? | There are impacts on social and behavioral sciences that might be investigated as to how the ability to guide people on electronic maps where "blue dots" are placed warrants investigation. |
Lessons Learned | |
Overall results | The test environment on the University of New Hampshire campus is operating and a draft application has been released to beta testing. Further development is ongoing. |
