Project Description Professors James Dearworth and Eric Ho at Lafayette College with Soundararajan Ezekiel at Indiana University of Pennsylvania are proposing a research project that would benefit from student collaboration in AI/ML, which leverages the PA Science DMZ networking infrastructure. Research goals include extension of data analytics for a current project at Lafayette, which was presented at the CyberAcclerate poster session of KinberCon in October 2025. Poster titles for project were “Bacteriophage Classification using a Convolutional Neural Network Model” and “Generation of Test Images of Bacteriophages via Scanning Electron Microscopy for an AI Model”. Proposed project is two pronged. In one part, Lafayette College students will work by coding with students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania with their machines to clarify the image data used for training AI/ML. In the second part, Lafayette College students will work to extend the number of test images acquired from phage samples isolated at Lafayette College to test the performances by AI/ML. Images will be captured by Lafayette’s in house Zeiss EVO 25 Lab6 SEM. The PA Science DMZ network will provide the cyberinfrastructure connectivity necessary for the project.
