Project Description | The existence of a new GPU cluster at the University of Vermont (DeepGreen) expected to come online in Summer 2019 necessitates a new approach for onboarding researchers across disciplines. This includes the goal of introducing new users with varying high performance computational skillsets to the instrument. The research computing facilitator will design and build a set of curricular materials that meet the needs of UVM researchers while simultaneously developing competency in various machine learning frameworks. Ultimately we hope to give researchers enough training to allow them to incorporate machine intelligence into their workflows. |

Notes | |
What is the impact on the development of the principal discipline(s) of the project?
What is the impact on other disciplines? | Ian helped to organize an "Introduction to Machine Learning" workshop held in Fall 2019 at the University of Vermont and attended by 100 people encompassing all levels from undergraduate up to faculty. Jupyter notebooks demonstrating basic usage of tensor flow for non-domain specific pattern recognition were distributed to participants. Ultimately we hope this gave researchers enough training to allow them to incorporate machine intelligence into their workflows. |
Is there an impact physical resources that form infrastructure?
Is there an impact on the development of human resources for research computing? | The student gained hands-on experience with HPC and research computing including modern package management and scheduling software. |
Is there an impact on institutional resources that form infrastructure?
Is there an impact on information resources that form infrastructure? | The initial documentation created as part of this project led to the creation of a new online "Knowledge Base" for the VACC which was released in March 2020 to Vermont Advanced Computer Core users (https://vacckb.helpline.w3.uvm.edu/vacc/kb/). This constitutes a much more "user friendly" set of guides compared to our previous wiki and users have already commented on the improvement. |
Is there an impact on technology transfer?
Is there an impact on society beyond science and technology?
Lessons Learned | |
Overall results | Documentation on utilizing UVM's newest supercomputer was written and distributed to users and curricular materials were developed for an introductory machine learning workshop. |
