Project Description With the advent of Virtual Reality and Augment Reality edge computations have changed the computing landscape. Virtual Reality requires specialized gear to provide the needed computational power, while Augment Reality (AR) can leverage pre-computed specialized mappings along with edge calculations for the gamification of applications. We propose leveraging specialized onsite networking hardware along with AR and beconing technology. The specialized equipment will be housed and installed in the Higgins mansion, located at 80 William’s street onsite at Becker College Worcester campus. The overall goal of the project is to provided way-finding, historical context, and a platform for AR-based learning and entertainment mobile applications. Such applications will be developed by Becker College Game Design students, in-conjunction with the MGHPCC research associate/mentor and overseen by Becker College Computer and Design faculty. It is also planned to use the platform as a test-bed for future AR gamification and development projects.

Project Deliverables The outcome of the project is to deliver period material and framework mapping of historical, geographical, and social context of the space. As an example we are looking to leverage edge devices (ex: mobile phones) and AR to superimpose historical period images of spaces within the modern building construction; including a variety of overlays based upon the pedagogical needs to meet specific project outcomes. Suggested contextual mapping artwork history including: technology, suits of armor pressed steel, and social family gatherings. These contextual maps would illustrate key-concepts tied to specific learning outcomes.
